A\u00a0massive\u00a0fine-grained white or lightly tinted variety of gypsum, called\u00a0alabaster, has been used for\u00a0sculpture\u00a0by many cultures including\u00a0Ancient Egypt,\u00a0Mesopotamia,\u00a0Ancient Rome, the\u00a0Byzantine Empire, and the\u00a0Nottingham alabasters\u00a0of\u00a0Medieval England. Gypsum also crystallizes as translucent crystals of\u00a0selenite. It forms as an\u00a0evaporite\u00a0mineral and as a\u00a0hydration\u00a0product of\u00a0anhydrite.<\/strong><\/p><p><strong>The\u00a0Mohs scale of mineral hardness\u00a0defines gypsum as hardness
